Message for #Pixelfed admins
Do any of you encounter the following? Every 6 hours and consistently, my pixelfed server goes into a high memory usage, process is php-fpm triggered by pixelfed, before being killed by oom. Clearly a bot, never happened before.
Now I changed server with a full fresh install and new IP but it still goes on (even changed OS from 22.04 to 24.04, bumped RAM from 16 to 32 GB and php8.3 version to 8.4).
Do you administrators see similar behavior? See attached Grafana/Prometheus dashboard for illustration on a 24-hours period.
Any clue on how to mitigate such DoS attacks?
Reminder:
In case the administrators of your Mastodon, Peertube, Pixelfed or other fediverse service instance accept donations for their voluntary work, please donate to them if you can afford it to keep the service running in the long time.
Block Reccomendations: The TechHub Public Block List, WORST 200 instances. UPDATE
In light of the US Election tonight, the network is expecting a wave of #spam, #harassment, and #misinformation, especially after Trump preemptively declares victory.
#Admin s, do your #Moderators a favor and make sure you've got the worst-actor servers blocked.
This is a list I have assembled of all the worst servers TechHub has encountered, with explanations. These are not simply things I saw on #FediBlock or #InstanceBlock, these are hardcore servers where I personally found serious reasons we could not have them on the timeline: #Racism, #Harassment, #Pedophilia, etc.
I just added a couple more.

While I encourage you to glance over the reasons, and reach out to me if you think there are any servers that shouldn't be there, I do not recommend going to them to check: many contain illegal content.
Let's all keep Fedi safe together!
A few weeks ago we ran a poll asking your opinions about bots & spam on the Fediverse.
A 38% majority said that some features help combat bots, but it's not enough.
When we saw our process automatically deflect the bots in the Spam Wave, we knew we could help. That's why we're working with other instances to build a set of tools for admins and moderators.
If you're an admin or instance owner, feel free to get in touch!
An FYI for users of climatejustice.social -.global and -.rocks and a plea for #help from experienced #FediAdmins.
We currently have an issue that blocks federation between the climatejustice instances. Completely.
They are all on the same server, but so are a few other instances and federation between them works fine, as well as between them and climatejustice instances.
We don't know what might cause this issue. Does any #admin have any ideas? @b2c can use some help.
It has been an interesting weekend with mastodon spam management. In all I think this was a positive thing for the Fediverse. Some instance admins got reminded that they had an instance. And we also learned that there are A LOT of abandoned instances out there with their door wide open for registration without any approval. I'll release a list over the abandoned instances we discovered in the coming days, so other admins can benefit from it.
Hi, apologies for the spam wave we just had. We blocked all users responsible (79 of them!) and restricted sign-ups until we think it's good to un-restrict them.
Other instance admins: I recommend blocking the email domain chitthi.in and temporarily limit sign-ups from 185.220.101.0/24 so it doesn't happen to you as well.
Our statement of support as a server with the #BlueSkyBridge effort of @snarfed.org
As with Threads federation, I think it is fine that different servers and users take different views - that is feature not a bug of the fedi - but wanted to be very clear with our servers position here and the thinking behind it.

I've been on #Mastodon for almost a year now. There was a learning curve, but thanks to #Feditips and a fantastic #Admin team, I feel very at home here on #Kolektiva. For those who remember me from the #HellBirdSite, all my non-political interests can be found at @ShadowPlay -- where I post about #StarTrek, #Horror, #SiouxsieSioux, cat pics, and all the other "fun" stuff I used to post about (when I wasn't on a rant about Fukushima/TEPCO, or other corruption). Even Doomsday here needs a break from #DoomPosting!

With news of the probable launch of Meta's P95 I wanted to make clear this servers policy:
"Don't preemptively strike meta w/ a fediblock, but stay vigilant with eyes wide open and a finger on the block button."
The same as we do for all servers.
They can be blocked instantly if they violate our terms of use, and as admins are in a far stronger position if we do so then vs before.
I hope all #fediadmins to consider taking this same policy. 1 of X
Hey folks, we figure it's time to remind everyone about some of our rules and policies here on vis.social.
Some of them are obvious, and some might not be.
Let's start with using CWs.
